Level 1 A/B Technique

6 to 7 1/2 year olds experience the primary level of the Vaganova (Russian) curriculum, which is a graded program with measurable milestones. Students remain in this class usually 1-1 1/2 years. Promotion to the next level depends on correct body placement, execution and retention of dance material, and ability to actively participate in class. Classes consist of barre, center and diagonal work with basic jumps. All ballet steps are given in French terminology with translations of each term. Students are expected to know all terms taught at this level. Older students with no prior experience in ballet are often begun in level 1B which is a class for the slightly older child, helping make the child feel socially more comfortable. Students need no prior experience to register at this level. (1 hour class)
